Do I understand wrapper types correctly?

Am I correct in thinking that a primitive class like int, dose not allow the use of methods, but using int with a wrapper type Integer is what allows us to use a method like parseInt()? And if so is that the only purpose for the wrapper type?

The wrapper class allows you to use methods like any other class. Check the java API to see what the wrapper class is capable of doing. It's more than just parsing from a string to integer.
