What is the difference between the two elements that I have, and why is the second one wrong?

They are both missing an ending " for each alt attribute. Also the HTML5 Doctype says that self closing elements do not need a / at the end of their tag.

15,080 PointsFrom what I can see you aren't adding the closing " on the alt property. It may let the first image work, but it may cause an error which causes the second image to not work. Try:
<img src="img/facebook-wrap.png" alt="facebook profile" />
<img src="img/twitter-wrap.png" alt="twitter profile" />
