A good book that I am currently reading for beginners is - Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Step by Step or MySQL 5th Edition by Paul DuBois.
I would start with the SQL courses at Treehouse to get an idea what it is all about and then move into the books as they go into a bit more detail for syntax and how to manage your DB
