Current post conditional

Its kinda unclear for me, why the current post has to be == 0, and only then display the class active? What if the current post is equal to 1 for example?

Since the current_post is zero based, it means that the post with the id 0 is the first post in the loop. If the current post was 1, it'll display the second image in the loop. The active class means that that image is displayed in the carousel.
