CSS not linking

I'm following along with the writing HTML and linking CSS section by trying to create a basic site. So far, i'm starting out by placing the text inside the header and adding color to the the body of the page. However, when I preview it in the browser, the code for the the links to CSS is being displayed on the page right above the header. Any idea of where I'm going wrong?

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
  <head>
    <meta charset="utf-8">
    <title> Quiet Woods </title>
    <link> rel = "stylesheet" href = "css/normalize.css">
    <link> rel = "stylesheet" href = "css/main.css">
  </head>
  <body>
    <header>
      <h1> Quiet Woods </h1>
    </header>
  </body>
</html>
