Creating 3D Flags...

Hey, I'm trying to follow this tutorial on creating 3D flags.

I have my flag all set (and grouped together) and added it to symbols. I've created my wavy path with the pen tool and I'm trying to follow the steps on applying my flag to the 3D surfaces but I keep only ending up with whatever the stroke and fill the path I've created with the pen was originally set to. I've tried adding my flag (as a graphic symbol) to both all the surfaces that the extrude and bevel effect create and also only the ones that would make sense the flag to be on. I still keep only ending up with a 3D effect but with the solid color.

Any ideas on what I can do?

Yes, I believe I have.

  1. I've created my map with various shapes.
  2. Then group them all together and added them to the symbols panel and set the Symbol type to "Graphic".
  3. Then, I drew my path with the pen tool and 3D effect> Extrude & Bevel. I checked preview and chose Surface: No Shading as the tutorial said. Then I choose to "Map Art..." and at first it was tricky to choose which surface to map the symbol to as I was getting a bunch of areas including the sides of the 3D surface but I'm pretty sure I am choose the correct surface which would be the entire broad face of the flag. Then choose chose my new symbol, scaled to fit area and that's it. All I end up seeing is whatever my Fill and Stroke colors were before I started the process. Any ideas?
