Tommy suggested we use this forum to discuss cowboy coders.
Nobody is perfect. We all have our little quirks. Ideally we'd all always get on with each other, but in the real world, this just doesn't happen. The picture Tommy painted of a cowboy coder, to me, is someone who:
1) thinks he or she is better than everyone else
2) overestimates his or her abilities
3) overestimates his or her importance
4) thinks he or she is always right, and everyone else is always wrong
5) is thin-skinned and can't take legitimate criticism
6) does things in a hurry, leading to sloppy coding
7) blames everyone but himself or herself for everything that goes wrong
8) isn't a team player
I notice Tommy didn't ask why companies would hire cowboys in the first place. There are some employers that do things on the cheap and insist on cutting costs at every turn.
Tommy did suggest that we look for instances of cowboy coders so I thought I'd share this Stack Overflow thread I found:
