it doesnt seem to work

The problem is in the plus sign. This would work if you are using println.
String lastName= console.readLine(); String firstName = console.readLine(); console.println("Last Name: %s" + lastName);
console.println("First name: %s" + firstName);
However, with printf (f as in formated), you should do:
String lastName= console.readLine(); String firstName = console.readLine(); console.printf("Last Name: %s", lastName);
console.printf("First name: %s" , firstName);
Please note the ","
In this case, %s get replaced (formatted) with whatever the value of lastName or firstName
