Cant quite get why my code isn't working, need help please!..
This is what I wrote:
if(lastName.charAt(0) <= m){ lineNumber = 1; }else{ lineNumber = 2; } return lineNumber;
public class ConferenceRegistrationAssistant {
/**
* Assists in guiding people to the proper line based on their last name.
*
* @param lastName The person's last name
* @return The line number based on the first letter of lastName
*/
public int getLineNumberFor(String lastName) {
int lineNumber;
/*
lineNumber should be set based on the first character of the person's last name
Line 1 - A thru M*/
if(lastName.charAt(0) <= 'm'){
lineNumber = 1;
}else {
lineNumber=2;
}
return lineNumber;
}
}
public class Example {
public static void main(String[] args) {
/*
IMPORTANT: You can compare characters using <, >. <=, >= and == just like numbers
*/
if ('C' < 'D') {
System.out.println("C comes before D");
}
if ('B' > 'A') {
System.out.println("B comes after A");
}
if ('E' >= 'E') {
System.out.println("E is equal to or comes after E");
}
// This code is here for demonstration purposes only...
ConferenceRegistrationAssistant assistant = new ConferenceRegistrationAssistant();
/*
Remember that there are 2 lines.
Line #1 is for A-M
Line #2 is for N-Z
*/
int lineNumber = 0;
/*
This should set lineNumber to 2 because
The last name is Zimmerman which starts with a Z.
Therefore it is between N-Z
*/
lineNumber = assistant.getLineNumberFor("Zimmerman");
/*
This method call should set lineNumber to 1, because 'A' from "Anderson" is between A-M.
*/
lineNumber = assistant.getLineNumberFor("Anderson");
/*
Likewise Charlie Brown's 'B' is between 'A' and 'M', so lineNumber should be set to 1
*/
lineNumber = assistant.getLineNumberFor("Brown");
}
}

17,062 PointsHi, u have only 1 mistake, delete the "return like number", u dont need it.
the working code is this:
public class ConferenceRegistrationAssistant {
/**
* Assists in guiding people to the proper line based on their last name.
*
* @param lastName The person's last name
* @return The line number based on the first letter of lastName
*/
public int getLineNumberFor(String lastName) {
int lineNumber = 0;
if(lastName.charAt(0) <= 'M') {
return 1;
}
else {
return 2;
}
}
}

9,483 PointsHi Jorge. You actually just have a tiny typo on this line:
if(lastName.charAt(0) <= 'm'){
Char is case-sensitive, and since a last name starts with a capital letter, you need to use 'M', not 'm'.
Hope this helps :)

17,062 Pointseven though, i still return a int , i return a number. but yes the int lineNumber line is not required

9,483 PointsYou're right, I misread your code. Sorry. You are returning an int indeed, so there's no bug (it was very late last night when I commented on your post ^^).
Although you do not need to return lineNumber in your code, Jorge does as his code is different than yours. If he removes the line, there's no return statement and the test will fail.

9,483 PointsActually, the method has a return type (int) and as such it should return lineNumber. It is even specified in the Javadoc:
The return line is also already set for us in the exercise (line 17). For a method not to return a value, the return type needs to be void.
While I agree with you that not returning a value in this method does pass the test, it should not. I believe it is a bug and I have contacted Support to ask them to have a look. Edit: The test does not pass without a return statement. No bug there. My mistake.
