Cannot Connect to MySQL Database Server

When trying to establish a connection to the database server in MySQL Workbench, I am prompted for a password, which I enter only to receive this message:

Cannot Connect to Database Server Your connection attempt failed for user "root" from your host to server at localhost:3306: Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: YES)

I'm not really sure what's going on or how I can fix this issue. New to Databases and this has been stopping me from following along with the videos and learning. Any help would be appreciated.

Usually the password for MySQL is root, unless you've changed it. 

user name: root
password: root

When I used "root" as the password I got the same message and I don't remember changing/setting a password
