Can you use programming for animation?

I know that programming can be used to some extent like writing scripts. But are there other ways where programming can help you animate your cartoon for example?

Any comments on this are welcome!

There are several approaches to creating screen animations. Until recently, Flash was commonly used to create web animations; but it is being overtaken by newer technologies.

Scripts (JavaScript) can indeed animate things on the screen. Certain image formats (like GIF or SVG) can have their own animation sequences and only need to be displayed. And CSS has an animation feature. The best technique to use will depend on exactly what kind of things are being animated.
