Can you store a Git project on a file server? What about backups?

Is there a way to store a git "enabled" project on a file server? At my job, my department has a F:\, which is where we store our files. Could the files for a git project sit on this file server, and then I edit the files on my desktop and push the changes back to the file server?

Also, it seems the assumption is that projects live on your computer. How do people back-up their projects on a regular basis?

I don't have a ton of experience with push and pull requests to/from remotes, but assuming you can install git on your work computer it should work fine. Maybe set up your origin on github and setup your work and home computer as remotes, and then push/pull from origin.
