is it possible to nest/scaffold like this?

Nesting a grid within a grid is easily done if your using a framework such as Foundation or Bootstrap both of which are covered on Treehouse.
Nesting grids within vanilla css (normal css) as I understand it takes quite a bit of math as you have to figure out all the gutters etc. You can Google for more information on this as it's a process that can't really be explained fully in a post.
