Camel case names start with a lowercase initial letter and then capitalise the first letter of each new word that makes up the variable name: e.g. camelCaseVariableName
.

It is a naming convention that provides consistency and clarity - using the capitals allow the words to be identified, ensuring that the purpose of the variable is obvious. Other languages use different conventions such as snake_case_variable_name
.
In Java, variables are named with camel case, though. There's plenty of info in Wikipedia.
