Calling non-static method on a class

Why is there no error, when a non static method is being called directly on the class as opposed to an instance of the class? I.e (Animal)object.makeSound();

The method name in parentheses casts "object" to an instance of the class.

So in this example the method is being called on that instance, not on the class itself.
