How do i decide when to use which layout techniques? Does it depend on the complexity or is just a matter of personal choice? Is either one more efficient than other? Also is it advisable to use different techniques to style components of the same web page or different pages of the same website? (eg. using absolute and relative positioning for headers and floats for columns?)

23,118 PointsI agree with Joshua on this as well. Starting with the "user" point of view is solid advice. Remember its really hard to make a website that uses absolute positing be responsive. Theses are things that you need to think about.

There's a host of reasons that would aid in your decision to use a specific layout technique. One of the key concerns is who is actually using the website. If the primary user group is still using older, outdated browsers, then I recommend staying away from flex box.
My recommendation is "start with the user." From that point, consider the performance of the technique. Then the management of that technique. Will it take you longer to manage one technique over the other?
