Unable to use this method for 4.1 ruby, so what is an alternative that I can use and still use belongs_to

I would suggest using strong_params. However, if you just want to follow along with the videos exactly how they're going about it, you could add gem 'protected_attributes'
into your gemfile, then run bundle
in your command line.
