I was able to get the image down into the section by putting a standard <br /> tag before the image but not sure why it's doing that.

It looks like you could be on firefox. That browser has issues with how that image interacts with the floated header.
You can add clear: both;
to your existing wrapper div styles. This will make the wrapper div drop below the floated header.
