Am I not using the '.split()' function correctly?

I am am not far into the python basic course and I have no idea what is wrong with my code.

banana.py 
available = "banana split;hot fudge;cherry;malted;black and white"
sundaes = ';'.split(available)

It should be like this;

available = "banana split;hot fudge;cherry;malted;black and white"
sundaes = available.split(";")
