add should take two arguments

def add = (john, kelsey): total = (john + kelsey) return(total)

trial.py
def add = (john, kelsey):
    total = (john + kelsey)
    return(total)

My friend, the problem is very simple. you are not using the correct python syntax.

HINT

In python, functions are declared like:

def funtion_name(arg1, arg2, ...):
    # function behaviour
    # return statement
