17,985 PointsThe instructors at treehouse have already added the console object for you and the main method so you don't need to include any of that. You are getting the error because you have included it so your code, although you can't see it, looks like this :

Console console=System.console();
public static void main(String[] args)
{
Console console=System.console();
String firstName=console.readline("what is your name ? ");
console.printf("hello my name is %s\n",firstName);
}
}
Also the readline command needs a capitol L or you are going to get a syntax error, the only code you need for this challenge is this:
String firstName=console.readLine("what is your name ? ");
console.printf("hello my name is %s\n",firstName);
