The elements of art and design are the basic visual building blocks used to create an image. These are more familiar concepts, like line, shape, texture, color, and more. The principles of art and design are guidelines for combining elements together.

    There are lots of different types of visuals in the world. 0:09
    There are paintings, sculpture, photography, neon signs, websites, 0:12
    3D movies, virtual reality, the list goes on and on. 0:17
    These different types of visuals are called mediums. 0:21
    And in today's age of branding and consumerism, often designers and 0:24
    artists will need to create work that works across a wide variety of mediums. 0:28
    An illustration or a logo might appear on giant signage like a billboard or 0:34
    in the footer of a website. 0:40
    Or it might appear on different colored backgrounds. 0:42
    The same is true for software interfaces. 0:46
    A menu or a button, might need to work on a phone app, in a web browser and 0:49
    create a consistent experience across multiple screen resolutions and 0:54
    modes of interaction. 0:58
    How do you make sense of so many different mediums, and what are the common elements? 1:01
    And perhaps more importantly how do these elements work together 1:06
    to communicate with the audience? 1:10
    The foundations of visual imagery go by a few different names, but 1:12
    often you'll hear them called the elements and principles of art and design. 1:17
    There is also some variation in which elements and 1:23
    principles are included, combined, or just called different names. 1:25
    But generally speaking, 1:30
    what you'll learn in this course applies to both art and design. 1:31
    And it's what you'll find in most lists in art and design books and around the web. 1:36
