Effective agile teams have clear
standing agreements regarding
0:00
how they will work together.
0:04
Part of this is the artifact
known as the definition of done.
0:06
In the definition of done, a team
decides on a list of the things that
0:10
must occur for
a backlog item to be considered done.
0:15
This can include the completion of tasks,
code review, testing,
0:18
review with stakeholders,
product owner acceptance, and
0:23
anything else the team agrees
to include in their process.
0:28
To make sure that when they see
an item is done, it really is so.
0:32
One thing I found is that periodically,
0:37
a team will find a need to
review their definition of done.
0:39
A common warning sign occurs when
the backlog starts to fill with defects
0:43
related to work that
was recently completed.
0:48
Sometimes a team is so
focused on accomplishing a sprint and
0:51
moving on, that they start to loosen
up on their definition of done.
0:54
It's helpful to keep the definition of
done in a visible place where everyone can
0:58
refer to it, especially as they are
reviewing the work on a backlog item and
1:02
deciding if it is ready.
1:06
If a team is having a hard time
meeting their definition of done,
1:08
they may want to try taking on
a little less in the next sprint.
1:12
Along with making a renewed
commitment to the definition of done.
1:15
Work that is done is also
included in the sprint product.
1:19
The sprint product is the working software
the team produces each sprint and
1:23
only includes the items that are done.
1:27
Stakeholders see a demo of the sprint
product during sprint review, and
1:30
it is usually distributed either to
an internal audience or to customers.
