[Introduction to Design Deep Dive]
0:01
Hey! I'm Matt Helme, and welcome to Design Foundations.
0:05
Whether you're aware of it or not, design is all around us.
0:08
The word design can mean many things to many people.
0:10
Let's start off by breaking down the word design.
0:14
Design is a noun meaning the creation or construction of an object or a system.
0:18
It can be referred to as a verb meaning the act of design or designingβactually performing the task.
0:24
Because the term is used and defined so loosely,
0:32
we usually specify the type of design by the medium or process in which one designs for.
0:35
Examples of this are fashion designers, print designers, web designers, and so on.
0:42
More importantly, a designer is a problem solver.
0:48
He or she performs sequential tasks to solve a pre-determined problem.
0:52
This might be creating a specific uniform for a soldier or designing a package for a product.
0:57
The process may be different, but the approach is always the sameβ
1:03
to solve the problem at hand.
1:07
The soldier might need a more camouflaged pattern for a specific environment.
1:08
The designer then creates that pattern to their best ability, thus executing the problem at hand.
1:14
The package designer might have to design a waterproof package
1:20
that can withstand a certain weight limit but, also, stays within a certain budget for the client.
1:23
In this case, the client has presented the problem,
1:30
and the designer must solve that problem to their best ability.
1:33
The history of design dates back to the prehistoric ages.
1:37
Early man designed tools to help complete tasks easier.
1:41
This might have been weapons or cooking utensils.
1:45
Now did they know they were designing at the time?
1:48
No.
1:51
They were simply creating solutions for their problems;
1:52
then improving on those designs.
1:55
Maybe the weapons originally created were dull and not very effective,
1:57
so then they went back to the drawing board and designed sharper tools.
2:01
Now we understand that design is a thing and the act of doing that thing in a processed order.
2:05
Let's talk briefly about what design isn't.
2:12
An artist is not a designer.
2:15
However, they have very similar traits.
2:17
See, an artist is someone who creates for themselves from an emotional context.
2:20
Art is meant to spark questions or portray answers.
2:26
Art usually has different meanings for others.
2:30
Art has meaning and is rarely usable.
2:34
On the other hand, design is aimed to be understood by all.
2:37
Design is the communication of a specific message.
2:41
Good design will motivate someone to do a specific something.
2:44
Design is planned and has a specific audience.
2:48
Even though most of these could be argued in one way or the other,
2:53
they both are slightly different.
2:57
Think of it as a rectangle and a square.
2:59
A square can be a rectangle,
3:01
but a rectangle can't always be a square.
3:04
In our case, design can be art,
3:06
but art can't be design.
3:09
They are similar forms but not the same.
3:12
This course is geared for you to understand not only what design is,
3:15
but how to recognize great design and understand why it's great.
3:20
We will go through a total of 4 stages for this course.
3:24
This stage being the first,
3:28
we will understand what design is.
3:30
In the second stage, you will learn the elements and principles of design and how to critique.
3:33
In the third stage, you will learn how to become a great problem solver.
3:40
Finally, stage 4 will conclude our course and prep you for our course's final quiz to earn the course badge.
3:44
By the end of Design Foundations,
3:53
you'll have a great understanding of design and the design process;
3:55
also, how to implement design in your future projects.
3:59
Will you have the credentials to jump into a web design position at the end of the course?
4:04
No.
4:08
You will simply have the tools of understanding good design,
4:09
allowing you to move forward in your design career.
4:12
