[Mat Helme] The second step of the problem solving process for a designer is planning.
0:00
We know what the problem is and what the diagnosis is.
0:05
We now just need the plan for a solution.
0:10
In the planning phase, the designer simply lists what they need to do to carry out a great solution.
0:14
The planning process is nothing more than an educated guess.
0:20
Let's take a look at how this plays out in our story.
0:24
Jack knows what the problems are and he's diagnosed them.
0:28
Now, he needs to put together an educated guess about how to solve the problems.
0:32
In the design world, documenting an educated guess is known as writing a proposal.
0:38
A proposal is what Jack is going to present to Peter, the client.
0:43
Jack's list of diagnosed problems includes—
0:48
One, make the bakery more visible.
0:51
Two, develop a brand identity.
0:55
And three, convey the bakery visually through print and digital mediums.
0:58
Then, under that, he lists all the possible ideas he feels would solve the problems above.
1:04
One, make the bakery more visible with new signage and main attraction—maybe a sign spinner.
1:11
Two, develop a brand identity through a logo, color palette, type, and maybe a mascot.
1:18
Three, convey the bakery visually through print and digital mediums,
1:25
perhaps with menus, takeaways, packaging, signage, and a website that includes online ordering.
1:29
Jack puts his list into a proposal format, which he is now ready to deliver to Peter.
1:37
He talks over the details, gives Peter a deadline and the quote.
1:43
Peter agrees with a bit of worry.
1:48
Jack assures him of his talents and is now ready to move onto the next step—performing.
1:51
Before moving on to our next step, let's take a quick quiz.
