Hi, my name is Megan.
0:04
In this workshop, I'll be going over some
basic computer skills to make sure you're
0:11
ready for
your learning journey here at Treehouse.
0:16
This workshop will cover these
fundamentals on a Windows computer.
0:19
If you are on a Mac,
please check the teacher's notes below for
0:23
a link to the appropriate workshop.
0:26
Currently, my computer is on Windows 10.
0:29
Typically, what we will be
learning doesn't change, but
0:32
the overall look of the system might.
0:36
So if you notice your version is
different, you can still follow along.
0:38
Just be aware that things
may look a bit different.
0:42
With all that out of the way,
0:45
let's get into some skills you'll
need as a developer or designer.
0:47
First, we'll dive into your
computer's file structure.
0:52
At the bottom of your screen, you'll find
this folder icon on on your taskbar.
0:55
And when I hover over it, you can see
it says it's called File Explorer.
1:02
This is how you'll access your files.
1:07
By clicking on it, this box will pop up.
1:11
On the left are some favorites, and
1:14
the one we'll be focusing
on is your Documents.
1:17
This is where your files will be stored.
1:20
Here in my Documents folder, you can
see I have a file and a few folders.
1:23
To open a file, you can either right click
and choose Open, or you can double click.
1:31
Double clicking means you click in
the same spot twice in quick succession.
1:38
So double click, and then we're good with
using Google Chrome, so I'm gonna hit OK.
1:46
I'm just gonna say always do that.
1:53
And there's the file.
1:56
Now, if you move the mouse,
so if I did click, click and
2:00
I move my mouse, you can see I'm
trying to change the name of the file.
2:05
Or if I just do it too slow and
I do click, click, it also thinks I'm
2:10
trying to change the name of the file
instead of trying to open it.
2:15
So if you're having troubles with
your double clicking, pause me and
2:20
give that a try for a little bit and
unpause me when you're ready to move on.
2:24
Besides files, you'll also find folders.
2:30
Folders are a great way
to organize your files.
2:34
Folders can also be opened
by double clicking and
2:37
then I can use this arrow to go back.
2:40
Or you can also right click on it and
choose Open as well.
2:45
To create a new folder,
you can right click,
2:52
choose New and Folder.
2:57
Or you can choose New Folder
up here in the taskbar.
3:00
It's also up here at the very top as well.
3:04
Just gonna call it new for right now.
3:08
In this top bar, you can also change the
view of your files by clicking on View.
3:14
And then you can choose Extra large icons,
Medium icons.
3:21
You can choose a list,
Large icons, Small icons, and
3:25
Details, which is what
I currently have it on.
3:28
Whichever makes it easiest for you to
see the files in your file system and
3:32
whatever makes it easiest for you,
go ahead and choose that one.
3:36
One quick note for everyone learning
to code, I would highly suggest getting
3:42
used to naming folders and files with
either camel case or snake case.
3:47
Like this.
3:53
So I'm gonna use, I choose Rename.
3:54
And I'm gonna do camel case on this one.
3:58
So it would be something like this,
my and then when I start a new word,
4:01
I start with a capital letter, Index.
4:05
And if I had additional words, I would
just keep starting with a capital letter.
4:08
So that is camel case cuz it's
almost like the humps on camel.
4:13
Now snake case, to Rename,
you start with whatever your word is and
4:17
then you do underscores
in between each word.
4:23
So my_folder_here.
4:28
Spaces in your folder and
4:36
file names can be really tricky and
annoying to deal with.
4:38
So if you start making a habit
now of using camel case or
4:44
snake case when naming your folders and
files,
4:47
you'll save yourself a whole bunch of
headaches later on, I promise you.
4:51
In the next video, we'll look more into
how you can interact with your files.
4:56
See you there.
